Napster To Blame For Poor Sales?

November 3, 2000 - Sammy Hagar's Ten 13 debuted at a disappointing #52 on the Billboard album chart this week, with sales of 25,061. Marching To Mars, Sammy's 1997 solo album debuted at #18. 1999's Red Voodoo debuted at #22 with first week sales of 48,043.

On September 19, Launch.com printed an interview with Sammy where he expressed his concerns about Napster:

"My CD's been on there - every song - for weeks."

"We'll see. If my first record sales aren't comparable to what my past is, then I'll say Napster hurt me."

Sammy may have a valid point, but how many of you went out and bought the album after previewing the songs on Napster? Sure, there are some people who would have downloaded the album without buying it, but there would also be many who used the service to hear the album before shelling out the money to buy it. There is currently no way of determining how many people used either method, so complaining about poor sales seems a bit odd.

The question that should be asked is this: how did the entire Ten 13 album get to Napster over a month before its release date?

New DLR Single Released To Radio

DLR single cover art November 8, 2000 - Look At All The People Here Tonight is the title of the latest song by David Lee Roth. The song isn't available in shops - the only way you can hear it is by calling your local radio station and requesting it. If they don't know what you're talking about, tell them to email tk@slawterhouse.com (Dave's webmasters) with their station details and they will be provided with a copy.

The song may surprise Dave's die-hard fans. In a huge departure from his trademark sound, the new tune doesn't have conventional lyrics, and is set to an electronica-style techno beat. Over the top of the beat are a number of "Daveisms", sampled from Van Halen's US Festival and Argentina shows in 1983.

A video montage has been created to accompany the new song. To view it, go to the WAZZUP! section of Dave's site.

According to Roth's webmasters, the song is the first from his forthcoming album. They have assured me that the rest of the songs on the album are closer to the DLR Band sound. No title or release date for the album have been given.

Dweezil Spills The Beans

Graphic: Dweezil Zappa November 23, 2000 - Dweezil Zappa, son of the late Frank Zappa and extraordinary guitarist in his own right, has joined the growing list of musicians who are openly speaking about the still-unofficial reunion between David Lee Roth and Van Halen.

Dweezil dropped by the KNAC.COM studios on Tuesday November 21 for a chat with Managing Editor, Frank Meyer. After pursuading Zappa into playing a few Van Halen riffs on his guitar, the conversation turned to the impending Van Halen reunion with original frontman, David Lee Roth.

According to this report at KNAC.COM, Dweezil confirmed there would be a new Van Halen album with David Lee Roth on vocals. He didn't come out and say it outright, but when quizzed if he was "informed", Zappa "gave a wink and a knowing glance, as if to say 'yes'". Automatic, Dweezil's latest album, was released on Steve Vai's Favored Nations label on November 21. Click here to purchase it from Amazon.com

KNAC planned to interview photographer Neil Zlozower last night. "Zloz" is well-known for his exceptional photographic work with many major rock artists, including Van Halen. Lonn Friend planned on playing the Zappa interview to Zloz on the air to get his thoughts on the VH reunion. Check KNAC's web site for a possible update on this tomorrow.

In other news, the most recent edition of industry newspaper Radio & Records previewed the first quarter album releases for 2001. According to R&R, Warner Bros. have a new Van Halen album set for a Q1 release. If that's the plan, the year-long "no news is good news" policy should expire very soon!
