"Jump" Plays As Man Threatens Suicide
February 2, 2001 -
In Omaha, Nebraska today a man wanted on a domestic violence warrant
threatened to jump from an overpass. While police were negotiating
with the man to come down, Van Halen's song Jump was played
on the police radio.
Police spokesman Sgt. Dan Cisar said the broadcast couldn't have been
heard by the man, who surrendered after four hours. An investigation
into the radio incident has been ordered.
According to the book The Van Halen Encyclopedia by CJ Chilvers,
David Lee Roth penned the lyrics to Jump after watching a man on the
news threatening to jump from the Arco Tower. Dave thought that whenever
there's someone threatening to jump, there's always someone on the ground
telling them to "go ahead and jump".

2000 has come and gone, and I don't have to tell you that it was probably
the most frustrating year ever in the life of Van Halen fans. "No news is
good news" got old real fast.
