New Song Hoax Won't Go Away
February 7, 2001 -
Over the past week I've received many emails asking if I've seen an
alleged new Van Halen song called Independent's Day on various web
sites and Napster. To answer these and future emails in advance - yes,
I've seen it, and no, it's not the new Van Halen single.
The song has been going around since August 25, and is still causing
confusion. This confusion has been made worse because a
number of radio stations have decided to put the song on their servers
for download, advertising it as the new Van Halen single with David
Lee Roth! For those that are recent visitors to the site, I've reprinted
below what I wrote about the song on August 25, 2000.
Napster
If you think you've seen the new Van Halen song on Napster, you haven't. Many
readers have downloaded a song titled Van Halen with David Lee Roth - Independent's Day.mp3.
This is not the long-awaited new song!
In the cases I've seen, the song on Napster is an unreleased Van Halen track titled
Here's Just What She Wanted. It was recorded live at the Whisky A Go-Go on Dec 31,
1977.
If you use Napster and have the song in your shared folder, please do everyone a
favour and rename it to reflect the correct song title.

Dec 31, 2000 - 2000: The Year In Review
2000 has come and gone, and I don't have to tell you that it was probably
the most frustrating year ever in the life of Van Halen fans. "No news is
good news" got old real fast.
