Doc McGhee Clarification
April 18, 2001 -
Although it has never been confirmed by the band (see the "no news is good news"
policy), it's widely believed that Ray Danniels is no longer managing Van Halen.
Fan speculation has seen names like Tim Collins (Aerosmith) and Doc McGhee
(Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Kiss) tipped to take over the job, but again (remember that
"no news is good news") nobody really knows because the band won't confirm
or deny anything. Maybe they don't even have a manager yet?
Earlier this month the Kiss "Farewell" tour made its way around Australia.
Kiss Manager, Doc McGhee was rumoured to have told fans backstage that he
would be bringing Van Halen with David Lee Roth out to Australia later
this year.
Andrew McNeice from melodicrock.com
called McGhee Entertainment in Los Angeles on April 14 to ask about the rumoured
partnership between Van Halen and Doc McGhee. The representative he spoke to
said:
"There have been no direct meetings or approaches to do with Van Halen from either camp"
, and:
"There are no current plans to work with the band."
This morning I received further information from a fan who spoke to Doc
McGhee himself less than 24 hours ago. His email is printed below.
I've read your updates regularly, yet never sent anything as all I had was
my opinion. But, I had a great "chance encounter" last night and figured
I'd pass it along for whatever it's worth. I figured it might dispel one of
your current rumors.
Last night (4/18) I was heading into The Cellar at Folley's here in San
Francisco to see Steve Poltz open for Bob Schneider, when Doc McGhee walked
in just in front of me. After the show, I was leaving and he was out front
having a smoke and I couldn't stop thinking about the rumor of him being the
new VH manager. I usually leave celebs alone, but this time (as a big
Sammy/VH fan) I couldn't control myself.
I walked up to him and said "so, any info on when they're going to make an
announcement about Dave?" He clearly knew what I was talking about and was
very friendly. He kinda laughed and said "ya know, I said something in
Japan that was taken wrong." He explained that someone asked him what he
would like to do after Kiss and he said he would like to work with Van Halen
- but it was more like he was thinking or wondering out loud.
He said he's a fan of Van Halen and has known Eddie and Alex for a long
time, but that he hasn't talked to them in probably 3 years. We talked a
little more and he said that I probably new more about the whole scenario
than he did (thanks to the News Desk). One interesting thing that he did
mention echoed something I thought I read that Sammy said. He thought it
would be great to get Dave and Sammy and VH all on the road - together. And
to think about it, if he could keep Kiss on the road, plus Motley and Bon
Jovi back in the day - he'd be the guy to pull it off.
Doc McGhee was formally interviewed by Paul Miles from
Chronological Crue
backstage before the April 5 Kiss concert at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia.

Stay tuned for the next chapter of the Van Halen soap opera. It may not involve
Doc McGhee, but I get the impression that he wouldn't say no if he was asked
to be part of the next Van Halen era.

Dec 31, 2000 - 2000: The Year In Review
2000 has come and gone, and I don't have to tell you that it was probably
the most frustrating year ever in the life of Van Halen fans. "No news is
good news" got old real fast.
