Clarification Regarding Van Halen Cartoon
April 30, 2001 -
Over the weekend I altered the cartoon of the band that has become the
de-facto logo for the Van Halen News Desk. You may remember that the
original depicted Eddie and Alex Van Halen both smoking cigarettes - Alex
with one in his mouth and Eddie with one in his right hand. Alex was
also wearing a Marlboro t-shirt.
After getting confirmation from Eddie Van Halen last Friday regarding
his cancer situation, I felt it was appropriate to remove all evidence
of smoking from the cartoon.
First, I airbrushed out the cigarettes and Marlboro logo. Then it was time
to put back the black circle and question mark over Dave's head.
I thought about Dave's recent comments revealing that he worked with
the band last year and decided that it was pointless hiding his face
any longer. The fact is, the artist who drew the cartoon for this
site, a very talented fellow-Australian by the name of
Garth Jones,
drew David Lee Roth in the picture. Whether Dave is in the band or
not at this stage is not relevant.
David Lee Roth was the guy who was in the band during their most successful
period, and is the person who most people (fans and non-fans) recognize as
the lead singer of Van Halen.
[Ed note]: After writing the above paragraph I was bombarded with emails
from fans saying that Sammy was Van Halen's most successful singer. I didn't
write this to start another Sammy vs Dave war! My opinion that
the "Dave era" was the most successful is based on the fact that the Van Halen albums
with Dave as singer have outsold the Sammy era albums by almost 2:1. If you
wish to debate the merits of Sammy as the lead singer over Dave, please
don't email me! I'm not interested in beating that dead horse any longer!
Thanks!
Some of you will be startled when you see the altered picture and assume
that Dave is officially in the band again. I apologize if you think this, because
it's not the case at this moment. Please remember that this is an unofficial
site, and nothing you see or read here is official. For the official word
from David Lee Roth and Van Halen, be sure to visit their official web sites.

Dec 31, 2000 - 2000: The Year In Review
2000 has come and gone, and I don't have to tell you that it was probably
the most frustrating year ever in the life of Van Halen fans. "No news is
good news" got old real fast.
