Van Halen Join Growing List

January 25, 2002 - The list of stars who have departed from their record labels in recent times grew by one yesterday when it was revealed that Van Halen were no longer with Warner Bros. Records.

Take a look at this list. It reads like a who's who of artists who at one time were selling millions of albums.

Mariah Carey
Rod Stewart
Anita Baker
Sinead O'Connor
Tori Amos
Collective Soul
David Bowie

This article by Reuters journalist Merissa Marr reminds us that not even multi-platinum selling artists like Mariah Carey are a sure thing any more.

Van Halen, through their webmaster, have made it clear that Warner Bros. did not drop them. This could be interpreted in many ways. The most likely situation is that the label would only keep the band in the newly formed AOL/Time Warner stable if a certain lead singer with the initials DAVID LEE ROTH was part of the lineup. Another possibility is that after the critical and commercial failure of the 1998 album Van Halen III, the WB offer on the table was nowhere near the level desired by the band.

Once again, without sounding like a broken record, since Van Halen won't tell us anything about what they're doing, we can only speculate.

The lack of formal announcement or press release (due to it "not being newsworthy") shows that Van Halen either have no idea that so many of you are out there dying to know what's happening, or if they do, simply don't care. It's also surprising that no press release was forthcoming from Warner Bros. Maybe, like a lot of Van Halen's fans, they just don't care any more.
