Van Halen Snubbed By Rock Hall of Fame
November 21, 2003
The 2004 inductees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame were announced yesterday. Van Halen weren't on the list.
While it's unknown why they didn't get inducted (they are eligible), I can speculate. I believe that if
Van Halen hadn't split with Sammy Hagar in 1996 and had continued their release schedule over the subsequent
years then they would have been a certainty to be inducted the first year they were eligible (2003 or 2004, depending
on who you listen to).
I also think that if they'd got back full-time with Dave in 1996 they would have been in for sure.
This is not a slant on Gary Cherone at all, but I think the whole "third singer" thing, coupled with five years
of silence, has dropped Van Halen off the list of artists who are certainties for Hall of Fame induction. At least
in their first years of eligibility.
The performers who will be inducted on March 15, 2004 are: Prince, the late George Harrison, Prince, Bob Seger, ZZ Top
Jackson Browne, Traffic and The Dells.
It would be easy to argue why Van Halen deserve to be in the Hall of Fame before any of these performers, but
I'm biased. I don't even have to look up the books to know that on record sales alone (counting George as
a solo artist, not a Beatle), Van Halen has easily outsold them all.
Still no further news to report about the rumour of Sammy Hagar being back in Van Halen. I'm surprised that
many of the major music news sites still haven't reported it. Maybe it's a case of "we're tired of reporting
Van Halen singer rumour #49510 - print nothing until it's official!"
