Ed's Gift Confirmed
December 17th, 2004
Recently, The Van Halen News Desk reported that we were working to confirm rumors that Edward had given a guitar to either Dimebag Darrell posthumously or to his family. We still have not received official confirmation but the following accounts by others in attendance give us a bit more detail on the matter.
Excerpted from a Blabbermouth.net report penned by Jason Bittner, drummer of Shadows Fall:
. . .
[at the public memorial for Dimebag Darrell in Arlington, TX, following a moving speech by Zakk Wylde, none other than] Eddie Van Halen ... who had given Rita ( Dime 's wife, pretty much) his actual old black/yellow Charvel for Dime to be buried with. It was pretty surreal!!"
Further, the Dallas-Ft. Worth Star-Telegram reports:
"They had him dressed exactly as you would find him on stage," said comedian Mark Britten, who attended the services. He said Abbott was laid out in camouflage shorts with a yellow-and-black guitar that Van Halen had given him. "As bad as it is, he had a very good send off."
So it seems reasonably well documented that Ed did in fact bring a yellow and black guitar as a gift, but the terms under which it was given remain a mystery. It is also unclear if this is the guitar made famous during Ed's solo on the long table in the library in the Hot For Teacher video or if it is one of the current EVH Art Series Guitars.
As always, we'll keep looking until we find out and then let you know right here, on the VHND.
