PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, West Michigan is home to countless people of Dutch heritage with
phone books replete with names beginning with "Van" - a place where a
people called Van Halen can feel at home; and
WHEREAS, Grand Rapids' and Van Halen's history lists innumerable,
extraordinary conterminous events;
WHEREAS, 1978 was the Year of Running with the inauguration of the now
classic River Bank Run and the introduction of Van Halen's now classic
"Running with the Devil"; and
WHEREAS, in 1981 Grand Rapidians participated in the first Celebration on
the Grand, a week-long city celebration centering at Ah-Nab-Awen Park
while Van Halen was rocking down "Mean Street" on "Sunday Afternoon in the
Park" pondering "So This is Love?"; and
WHEREAS, back in 1996, while Grand Rapids proudly debuted the Van Andel
Arena, a venue just begging for Dutch performers such as Van Halen who
were putting the finishing touches on their "Best of Volume 1" record;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, George K. Heartwell, Mayor of the City of Grand Rapids,
Michigan, do hereby proclaim Monday, June 2, 2008 as
Van Halen Day
in Grand Rapids in recognition of the vanerated Van Halen band performing
a vantastic show at the Van Andel Arena.
