On this day in 1984, the original lineup of Van Halen—Michael Anthony, David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, and Alex Van Halen—played their very last show together. Five ‘Monsters of Rock’ Festival dates in Europe were to be their last shows of their massive 1984 tour. Those festival dates kicked off Aug 18th in Leicestershire, England, and ran through Sept 2nd in Nuremburg, Germany. Today’s date marks the anniversary of the final concert with the original lineup, and the final date with David Lee Roth (until Roth rejoined the band over two decades later).
Of course, in 2007 David Lee Roth rejoined the reformed band, featuring the young Wolfgang Van Halen replacing original bassist, Michael Anthony. The band toured through 2008. In 2012, they released a #2 album, A Different Kind Of Truth, and toured a second time with the reformed lineup. In 2015 they released Tokyo Dome In Concert and toured North America.
Here’s several photos and a short video Van Halen’s performance of their #1 hit “Jump,” all from that day in Nuremburg, which to this day remains the very last show with the legendary original lineup.
