Surf the web and you’re bound to find thousands of videos by die-hard Eddie Van Halen fans, doing their damnedest to pay a fitting tribute to their hard rock hero. Then there’s Andres Nunez, the Colombian musician who took first at the 2016 Sibelius Fest electric guitar festival. Nunez’ January 2018 YouTube video “If Yngwie Malmsteen Played For…” has racked up more than 440k views. He followed it up this month with, who else? “If Eddie Van Halen Played For…”
The video features several one-minute clips of Nunez playing, in complete EVH style, the What if? Guitar leads you might have heard had Eddie played for bands such as ZZ Top, A-ha, Megadeth and The Police.
“I’ve admired Eddie’s unique style for a long time,” Nunez says. “His phrasing, tapping and, obviously, his riffs. For me he’s one of the best riffs makers ever, and I thought it would be interesting to adapt his style to other bands and genres.”
Nunez says he’s still learning Eddie’s style, but it’s obvious he’s been channeling Eddie for quite some time. We’ll certainly be on the lookout for a follow-up.
