We’re still celebrating the 65th birthday of our favorite true rockstar on VHND this week. And right now it’s time to look at one of David Lee Roth’s “unsung” talents … his gift of gab. He’s the master of the interview. There’s no one like him.
Van Halen News Desk’s Eric Senich has released an episode of his podcast DISCovery devoted to Dave-isms…
Eric: While most of what we read and hear about David Lee Roth focuses on the iconic music and videos he created with Van Halen, along with his legendary live stage performances, the latest episode of the DISCovery podcast will focus on his ability to give what may be the most interesting and entertaining interview of anyone in the history of rock and roll.
Travel back in time to 1978 and listen to interviews from a then-unknown, somewhat modest Dave Roth to the mid ’80s and Diamond Dave – the overconfident, outrageously funny front man of the biggest band in the world.
Hear the transition he made from the always upbeat, always cool Diamond Dave to the at-times combative post-Van Halen breakup Dave of the late 80s and 90s. We’ll also hear from a former Dallas DJ who will tell us about his memorable experience interviewing Dave one-on-one in the studio in 1991. Finally, we’ll hear David Lee Roth, aka “Uncle Dave”, in the 2000s, before and after he finally reclaimed his role as Van Halen lead singer.
He’s the man who’s living the rock star life and just can’t wait to tell us all about it. This is the story of David Lee Roth – the man who turned the interview into an art form.

Senich is a long-time Connecticut FM rock disc jockey and an ever longer-time fan of not just Van Halen but classic rock. He launched his podcast in March and devotes each episode to the greatest albums, artists and songs of the period between the mid ’60s to the mid ’90s or, as he likes to call it, the period from the vinyl disc all the way to the compact disc.
“I like to use the word ‘infotainment’ to describe the podcast,” said Senich. “I love podcasts that get into the trivia, the factoids if you will, behind movies, music, sports, books, historical events, you name it. It’s as entertaining as it is informative and so that’s what I aim to do with DISCovery. After working as a broadcaster since the early to mid ‘90s it’s nice to do it strictly as a hobby where I can stretch out and cover all these great classic rock bands and songs the way I had always wanted. Hopefully the listeners have as much fan listening to the episodes as I do creating them.”
